Author

The numerous similarities with 2 John show that the two letters are written by the same person. Like 2 John it begins with greetings from “the Elder,” who loves Gaius “in truth” and rejoices that Gaius walks “in the truth.” It also closes like 2 John, expressing the wish to “speak face to face” instead of writing, and passing along personal greetings. This author is then most likely John the apostle, who is also believed to have written 1 and 2 John and the Gospel of John. (See the Introductions to 1 and 2 John, “Author.”)

Audience

Third John is one of the few New Testament letters written to a single individual. The letter gives evidence that this individual, Gaius, is a loyal friend of John and of “the brethren” John mentions. He was apparently wealthy enough to offer hospitality when these brothers came to visit. Gaius is a common Roman name; and though there is a Gaius mentioned in four other places in the New Testament (Acts 19:29; 20:4; Rom. 16:23; 1 Cor. 1:14), it is impossible to know whether this Gaius was one of these.

Message

At the time 3 John was composed, the other apostles, along with many other “brethren,” were traveling about preaching the name of Jesus. These teachers were dependent on the hospitality of other believers. This letter praises Gaius for his hospitality to them and urges him to continue even in the face of Diotrephes’s selfish rivalry. There is no evidence that Diotrephes was one of the “deceivers” spoken of in 1 and 2 John, for no false teaching is mentioned. He does, however, exemplify the unloving behavior 1 John (2:9; 3:14) warned against.

Third John deals with a challenge that all people face, whether in their own hearts or in their dealings with other people. Like Diotrephes in the letter, everyone is tempted at times to seek their own power or honor, even at other people’s expense. This letter holds out a better option—sharing together with others for the sake of a greater cause. The letter also gives readers of today a fascinating glimpse into the life and challenges of the early church.

11 Diotrephes’s power and influence may be impressive, but he is not to be imitated. has not seen God. Speaks of the ultimate reality that evildoing has no place in the lives of God’s children. Nevertheless, 1 John recognizes that at the present time believers are not yet fully without sin and can only reach this ideal through Jesus (1 John 1:7–2:2; 5:13).
