Paul’s authorship of 2 Corinthians is virtually uncontested. The church fathers, as well as nearly all scholars, consider Paul to be the author of this letter.

Things went badly during Paul’s second visit to Corinth (2:1–4; 13:2). The Corinthian believers turned their backs on him because they suspected him of insincerity and fraud. The problem was largely caused by false teachers who had come in (11:13ff.). It is unclear, however, whether they were already there when Paul wrote 1 Corinthians and whether they may have been the cause of some of the issues addressed by the letter.

Second Corinthians gives ample hints of the untrue accusations leveled against Paul. Among them were that: (1) Paul was worldly because he had changed his travel plans (1:15–23); (2) he lacked ministerial credentials (3:1–3); (3) he did not accept hospitalities from the Corinthians because he loved the Macedonians more (11:7–11; 12:13); (4) he was weak and lacked spiritual experiences like visions and revelations (12:1–3); (5) he lacked personal charisma when he spoke (10:1–2, 10ff.); and (6) he was stealing money (12:17–18). Most likely, not all these issues were raised by a single group of people, but by many different splinter groups.

Paul wrote 2 Corinthians to settle these issues once and for all.

Judging by his letter to the Romans, which was written from Corinth during his “third visit” (see 12:14; 13:1), Paul’s four letters to the church coupled with his final visit were successful in dealing with the issues.

The problems in Corinth (see “Audience” above) do not fully explain the contents of 2 Corinthians because discouraging and trying circumstances do not necessarily produce such uplifting thoughts as expressed in this letter. Second Corinthians is a deposit of the inspired words and attitudes that this great apostle generated from his gospel and used to overcome obstacles threatening his ministry and congregation.

Second Corinthians is arguably Paul’s most personal and defensive letter. Modern readers are sometimes offended by the overall defensive tone of the letter. In the ancient world, the message was inseparable from the messenger. In 2 Corinthians, Paul vigorously defends his reputation because he knows that his message, the gospel, will be rejected if he allows his character and credibility to be undermined. In fact, Paul cares little how he is viewed in the end. He is fully aware that he is a mere earthen vessel (4:7); he defends himself for the sake of the truth of the gospel (13:7–8).

This letter vividly portrays the kind of attitude and lifestyle that is appropriate for those who accept grace. What is instructive about 2 Corinthians is that it defines the grace of Christ not so much in terms of Christ’s gracious bestowal of salvation, as in the complete unworthiness of those who receive it. To Paul came the grace, or gift, of apostleship. In view of this calling, Paul chose a life of poverty, rejection, and persecution (6:4–5, 11:23ff.), thereby becoming “the filth of the world” (1 Cor. 4:13). Paul wished to live and die as one unworthy, not only in the sight of God but in the eyes of the world. To receive grace from any other posture than weakness (12:9–10) is to lessen the power of God.

Second Corinthians speaks profound messages to churches that are facing problems similar to Paul’s. Moreover, it reminds readers that Christianity is strongest when it is weak and suffering from rejection, suspicion, and prejudice (12:10; 13:4)—an apt word for those confronting the closing period of earth’s history.

5:6 at home … from the Lord. Some see in 4:16–5:10 (and especially in 5:6, 8) the view that at death the soul of the believer is freed from the body and returns to God, an unbiblical perspective (see notes on John 11:11–14; 1 Cor. 15:51–55). The passage must be read in conjunction with 1 Cor. 15:12–58, Paul’s discussion of the resurrection, which he penned to these same believers a short time before and where he is painstakingly clear that the resurrection and the beginning of eternal life occur at the Second Coming (see esp. 1 Cor. 15:52–53). Here Paul is contrasting earthly life (“at home in the [earthly] body we are absent from the Lord”) with the heavenly existence he desires to experience (“to be absent from the [earthly] body and to be present with the Lord”; see Rom. 8:18–23) and is not interested in the timing of when the exchange takes place. See note on Phil. 1:23.
