Jeremiah 10:1-6

Hear ye the word which the LORD speaketh unto you, O house of Israel: 2 Thus saith the LORD, Learn not the way of the heathen, and be not dismayed at the signs of heaven; for the heathen are dismayed at them. 3 For the customs of the people are vain: for one cutteth a tree out of the forest, the work of the bands of the workman, with the axe.4 they deck it with silver and with gold; they fasten it with nails and with hammers that it move not. 5 They are upright as the palm tree, but speak not: they must needs be borne, because they cannot go. Be not afraid of them; for they cannot do evil, neither also is it in them to do good. 6 Forasmuch as there is none like unto thee, O LORD; thou art great, and thy name is great in might.

"အို ဣသရေလအိမ်တော်အပေါင်းတို့၊ ထာဝရအရှင်က သင်တို့အား မိန့်တော်မူသော စကားတော်ကို နားထောင်ကြလော့။
ထာဝရအရှင်က ဤသို့မိန့်တော်မူသည်—
တပါးအမျိုးသားတို့၏ လမ်းကို မလိုက်နှင့်။
မိုးကောင်းကင်နိမိတ်လက္ခဏာများကို မကြောက်ရွံ့ကြနှင့်။
အကြောင်းမူကား၊ တပါးအမျိုးသားတို့သည် ထိုလက္ခဏာများကို ကြောက်ရွံ့ကြ၏။
လူမျိုးတို့၏ ထုံးတမ်းစဉ်လာများသည် အချည်းနှီးဖြစ်၏။
သူတို့သည် သစ်ပင်ကို တောထဲမှ ခုတ်လှဲပြီး၊
လက်သမားတို့၏လက်ဖြင့် ပုဆိန်ဖြင့် ပြုလုပ်ကြ၏။
ထိုသစ်သားကို ငွေနှင့် ရွှေဖြင့် အပြောက်အမွမ်းတပ်ဆင်ကြ၏။
သူတို့သည် သံမှိုနှင့် သံခဲတို့ဖြင့် ခိုင်မြဲစွာ တပ်ဆင်ထားကြ၏။ မလှုပ်ရှားစေရန် ပြုလုပ်ကြ၏။
ထိုရုပ်တုများသည် စွန်ပလွံပင်ကဲ့သို့ ဖြောင့်မတ်သော်လည်း၊ စကားမပြောနိုင်။
သယ်ဆောင်ခြင်းကိုသာ ခံရမည်။ အကြောင်းမူကား၊ လမ်းမလျှောက်နိုင်။
ထိုရုပ်တုများကို မကြောက်ရွံ့ကြနှင့်။
အကြောင်းမူကား၊ ထိုရုပ်တုများသည် အမှုမပြုနိုင်။
ကျေးဇူးပြုခြင်းလည်း မရှိနိုင်။
အို ထာဝရအရှင်၊ ကိုယ်တော်နှင့်တူသောသူ မရှိပါ။
ကိုယ်တော်သည် ကြီးမြတ်တော်မူ၏။
ကိုယ်တော်၏နာမတော်သည် တန်ခိုးတော်နှင့် ပြည့်စုံတော်မူ၏။"

 

Answer

Some people have taken this text to mean that God forbids Christmas trees. While it is true that a tree is mentioned, the rest of the context clearly identifies what Jeremiah has been inspired to warn against. Idolatrous "customs of the people" are described as hewing down a tree, carving it, and shaping it into an idol. Then rearing it up, they decorate and venerate, or worship it. These graven images (verse 14)"cannot do evil, neither also is in them to do well" (verse 5). These idols will serve of no use

 or protection when the Lord comes. Isaiah writes, “And the loftiness of man shall be bowed down, and the haughtiness of men shall be made low: and the LORD alone shall be exalted in that day. And the idols he shall utterly abolish. And they shall go into the holes of the rocks, and into the caves of the earth, for fear of the LORD, and for the glory of his majesty, when he ariseth to shake terribly the earth. In that day a man shall cast his idols of silver, and his idols of gold, which they made each one for himself to worship, to the moles and to the bats" (Isaiah 2:17-20).

ထိုနေ့တွင် ထာဝရအရှင်တစ်ပါးတည်းသာ မြင့်မြတ်တော်မူလိမ့်မည်။
ထိုနေ့တွင် ရုပ်တုများကို အလုံးစုံ ဖျက်ဆီးတော်မူမည်။
လူတို့သည် ထာဝရအရှင်၏ကြောက်ရွံ့ခြင်းနှင့် ဘုန်းတော်ကြီးမြတ်ခြင်းကြောင့်၊
ကျောက်တောင်များ၏အပေါက်များထဲသို့၎င်း၊
မြေကြီး၏ဂူများထဲသို့၎င်း ဝင်ရောက်ကြလိမ့်မည်။
ထာဝရအရှင်သည် မြေကြီးကို ပြင်းစွာလှုပ်ခါတော်မူသောအခါ၊
လူတို့သည် မိမိတို့ကိုးကွယ်သော ငွေရုပ်တုများနှင့် ရွှေရုပ်တုများကို၊
ကြွက်များနှင့် လင်းနို့များထံသို့ ပစ်ချကြလိမ့်မည်။"
