Answer
This text does not imply that the
Sabbath was first given by the hand of Moses: nor that precepts, statutes, and
laws were first instituted by him. The fourth commandment begins with the words
“Remember the Sabbath day"(Exodus 20:8).This admonition did not only
suggest that it be not forgotten in the future, it also implied that it was
already given. They were already keeping the Sabbath (when the manna was
provided) prior to it being reiterated at Mt. Sinai (Exodus 16:23-26). And
centuries before, it was given and kept by the Creator and by the first parents
(Genesis 2:2-4).And at least four hundred years prior to Mt. Sinai it was said
of Abraham, “Because that Abraham obeyed my voice, and kept my charge, my commandments,
my statutes, and my laws"(Genesis 26:5).What the text is saying is that
Moses was the instructor used to give the instructions mentioned.
