Chapter 50—Condemned to Die [509]

နေရိုးမင်းရှေ့တွင် ပေါလု၏ နောက်ဆုံးအစစ်ဆေးခံရမှုအတွင်း၊ ဧကရာဇ်မင်းကြီးသည် တမန်တော်ကြီး၏ စကားများ၏ အရှိန်အဝါကြောင့် အလွန်အမင်း စိတ်စွဲလန်းသွားသဖြင့် အမှု၏ ဆုံးဖြတ်ချက်ကို ဆိုင်းငံ့ထားခဲ့ရာ၊ တရားခံဖြစ်သူ ဘုရားသခင်၏ အစေခံကို အပြစ်မှ လွှတ်ခြင်းလည်းမပြု၊ ပြစ်ဒဏ်စီရင်ခြင်းလည်း မပြုခဲ့ပေ။ သို့သော် နေရိုး၏ ပေါလုအပေါ် ရန်ငြိုးသည် မကြာမီ ပြန်လည်ပေါ်ပေါက်လာသည်။ ခရစ်ယာန်ဘာသာ ပြန့်ပွားမှုကို နန်းတွင်း၌ပင် မတားဆီးနိုင်သောကြောင့် ဒေါသထွက်လျက်၊ သူသည် ခိုင်လုံသော အကြောင်းပြချက် ရသည်နှင့်တစ်ပြိုင်နက် တမန်တော်ကြီးကို သတ်ပစ်ရန် ဆုံးဖြတ်ခဲ့သည်။ မကြာမီမှာပင် နေရိုးသည် ပေါလုကို အာဇာနည်အဖြစ် အသေခံစေရန် စီရင်ချက်ချမှတ်ခဲ့သည်။ ရောမနိုင်ငံသားတစ်ဦးကို ညှဉ်းပန်းနှိပ်စက်ခြင်း မပြုနိုင်သောကြောင့်၊ သူ့ကို ခေါင်းဖြတ်သတ်ရန် ပြစ်ဒဏ်ပေးခဲ့သည်။

During Paul’s fnal trial before Nero, the emperor had been so
strongly impressed with the force of the apostle’s words that he
deferred the decision of the case, neither acquitting nor condemning
the accused servant of God. But the emperor’s malice against Paul
soon returned. Exasperated by his inability to check the spread of
the Christian religion, even in the imperial household, he determined
that as soon as a plausible pretext could be found, the apostle should
be put to death. Not long afterward Nero pronounced the decision
that condemned Paul to a martyr’s death. Inasmuch as a Roman
citizen could not be subjected to torture, he was sentenced to be
beheaded.

Paul was taken in a private manner to the place of execution. Few
spectators were allowed to be present; for his persecutors, alarmed
at the extent of his influence, feared that converts might be won
to Christianity by the scenes of his death. But even the hardened
soldiers who attended him listened to his words and with amazement [510]
saw him cheerful and even joyous in the prospect of death. To
some who witnessed his martyrdom, his spirit of forgiveness toward
his murderers and his unwavering confdence in Christ till the last,
proved a savor of life unto life. More than one accepted the Saviour
whom Paul preached, and erelong fearlessly sealed their faith with
their blood.

Until his latest hour the life of Paul testifed to the truth of his
words to the Corinthians: “God, who commanded the light to shine
out of darkness, hath shined in our hearts, to give the light of the
knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ. But we
have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellency of the power
may be of God, and not of us. We are troubled on every side, yet
not distressed; we are perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but
not forsaken; cast down, but not destroyed; always bearing about
in the body the dying of the Lord Jesus, that the life also of Jesus
might be made manifest in our body.” 2 Corinthians 4:6-10. His

suffciency was not in himself, but in the presence and agency of
the divine Spirit that flled his soul and brought every thought into
subjection to the will of Christ. The prophet declares, “Thou wilt
keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on Thee: because
he trusteth in Thee.” Isaiah 26:3. The heaven-born peace expressed
on Paul’s countenance won many a soul to the gospel.

Paul carried with him the atmosphere of heaven. All who associ-
[511] ated with him felt the influence of his union with Christ. The fact that
his own life exemplifed the truth he proclaimed, gave convincing
power to his preaching. Here lies the power of truth. The unstudied,
unconscious influence of a holy life is the most convincing sermon
that can be given in favor of Christianity. Argument, even when
unanswerable, may provoke only opposition; but a godly example
has a power that it is impossible wholly to resist.

တမန်တော်ကြီးသည် မကြာမီ မိမိခံစားရမည့် ဆင်းရဲဒုက္ခများထက်၊ အစွဲအလမ်း၊ မုန်းတီးမှုနှင့် ညှဉ်းပန်းနှိပ်စက်မှုများကို ရင်ဆိုင်ရတော့မည့် သူချန်ရစ်ခဲ့မည့်သူများအတွက် ပိုမိုစိုးရိမ်ပူပန်ခဲ့သည်။ သတ်ဖြတ်မည့်နေရာသို့ သူ့နောက်သို့ လိုက်ပါလာသော ခရစ်ယာန် အနည်းငယ်ကို ဖြောင့်မတ်ခြင်းကြောင့် ညှဉ်းဆဲခြင်းခံရသူများအတွက် ပေးထားသော ကတိတော်များကို ထပ်ခါတလဲလဲ ပြောပြခြင်းဖြင့် သူတို့အား ခွန်အားပေးပြီး အားပေးခဲ့သည်။ သခင်ဘုရားသည် သူ၏စမ်းသပ်ခံ သစ္စာရှိသော သားသမီးများအတွက် ပြောထားသော စကားတစ်ခွန်းမျှ ပျက်ကွက်မည်မဟုတ်ကြောင်း သူအတည်ပြုခဲ့သည်။ ခေတ္တခဏမျှ သူတို့သည် စမ်းသပ်မှုအမျိုးမျိုးကြောင့် စိတ်မချမ်းသာ ဖြစ်ကောင်းဖြစ်နိုင်မည်၊ လောကီချမ်းသာများ ကင်းမဲ့ကောင်း ကင်းမဲ့နိုင်မည်၊ သို့သော် သူတို့သည် “ငါသည် အဘယ်သူကို ယုံကြည်သည်ကို သိ၏။ ငါအပ်နှံသော အရာကို ထိုနေ့ရက်တိုင်အောင် စောင့်ရှောက်နိုင်တော်မူသည်ဟု ငါယုံကြည်စိတ်ချ၏” ဟူသော ဘုရားသခင်၏ သစ္စာရှိမှုအပေါ် ယုံကြည်စိတ်ချခြင်းဖြင့် သူတို့၏ စိတ်နှလုံးကို အားပေးနိုင်သည်။ ၂ တိမောသေ ၁:၁၂။ မကြာမီ စမ်းသပ်မှုနှင့် ဆင်းရဲဒုက္ခ၏ ညသည် ကုန်ဆုံးတော့မည်ဖြစ်ပြီး၊ ထိုအခါ ငြိမ်သက်ခြင်း၏ ရွှင်လန်းသော နံနက်ခင်းနှင့် ပြည့်စုံသောနေ့သည် ထွက်ပေါ်လာလိမ့်မည်။

The apostle lost sight of his own approaching sufferings in his solicitude for those whom he was about to leave to cope with prejudice,
hatred, and persecution. The few Christians who accompanied him
to the place of execution he endeavored to strengthen and encourage
by repeating the promises given for those who are persecuted for
righteousness’ sake. He assured them that nothing would fail of
all that the Lord had spoken concerning His tried and faithful children. For a little season they might be in heaviness through manifold
temptations; they might be destitute of earthly comforts; but they
could encourage their hearts with the assurance of God’s faithfulness, saying, “I know whom I have believed, and am persuaded
that He is able to keep that which I have committed unto Him.” 2
Timothy 1:12. Soon the night of trial and suffering would end, and
then would dawn the glad morning of peace and perfect day.

တမန်တော်ကြီးသည် ကြီးမားသော နောင်ဘဝသို့ ဝေခွဲမရခြင်း သို့မဟုတ် ကြောက်ရွံ့ခြင်းတို့ဖြင့် မဟုတ်ဘဲ၊ ရွှင်လန်းသော မျှော်လင့်ချက်နှင့် စောင့်စားခြင်းတို့ဖြင့် မျှော်ကြည့်နေသည်။ သူသည် အာဇာနည်အဖြစ် အသေခံမည့်နေရာ၌ ရပ်နေစဉ်တွင်၊ လူသတ်သမား၏ သန်လျက် သို့မဟုတ် သူ၏သွေးကို လက်ခံတော့မည့် မြေကြီးကို မမြင်ဘဲ၊ [၅၁၂] ထိုနွေရာသီနေ့၏ တည်ငြိမ်သော မိုးပြာရောင် ကောင်းကင်ကို ဖြတ်၍ ထာဝရအရှင်၏ ပလ္လင်တော်ကို မျှော်ကြည့်နေသည်။

The apostle was looking into the great beyond, not with uncertainty or dread, but with joyous hope and longing expectation. As
he stands at the place of martyrdom he sees not the sword of the
[512] executioner or the earth so soon to receive his blood; he looks up
through the calm blue heaven of that summer day to the throne of
the Eternal.

This man of faith beholds the ladder of Jacob’s vision, representing Christ, who has connected earth with heaven, and fnite man with
the infnite God. His faith is strengthened as he calls to mind how
patriarchs and prophets have relied upon the One who is his support

and consolation, and for whom he is giving his life. From these holy
men who from century to century have borne testimony for their
faith, he hears the assurance that God is true. His fellow apostles,
who, to preach the gospel of Christ, went forth to meet religious
bigotry and heathen superstition, persecution, and contempt, who
counted not their lives dear unto themselves that they might bear
aloft the light of the cross amidst the dark mazes of infdelity—these
he hears witnessing to Jesus as the Son of God, the Saviour of the
world. From the rack, the stake, the dungeon, from dens and caves
of the earth, there falls upon his ear the martyr’s shout of triumph.

ခရစ်တော်၏ စွန့်လွှတ်အနစ်နာခံမှုဖြင့် ရွေးနုတ်ခြင်းခံရကာ၊ ကိုယ်တော်၏ အသွေးတော်ဖြင့် အပြစ်မှ ဆေးကြောခြင်းခံရပြီး၊ ကိုယ်တော်၏ ဖြောင့်မတ်ခြင်းဝတ်လုံကို ဝတ်ဆင်ထားသော ပေါလုသည် မိမိ၏ဝိညာဉ်သည် ကယ်တင်ရှင်၏ ရှေ့မှောက်တွင် အဖိုးထိုက်ကြောင်း မိမိကိုယ်တိုင် သက်သေရှိသည်။ သူ၏ဘဝသည် ဘုရားသခင်၌ ခရစ်တော်နှင့်အတူ ဝှက်ထားလျက်ရှိပြီး၊ [၅၁၃] သေခြင်းတရားကို အောင်နိုင်ခဲ့သော အရှင်သည် မိမိအပ်နှံထားသော အရာကို စောင့်ရှောက်နိုင်စွမ်းရှိသည်ဟု သူယုံကြည်စိတ်ချသည်။ သူ၏စိတ်သည် “နောက်ဆုံးသောနေ့၌ ထိုသူကို ငါထမြောက်စေမည်” ဟူသော ကယ်တင်ရှင်၏ ကတိတော်ကို ဆုပ်ကိုင်ထားသည်။ ယောဟန် ၆:၄၀။ သူ၏ အတွေးနှင့် မျှော်လင့်ချက်များသည် သူ၏သခင်၏ ဒုတိယအကြိမ် ကြွလာခြင်းအပေါ်တွင် ဗဟိုပြုနေသည်။ လူသတ်သမား၏ သန်လျက် ကျဆင်းလာပြီး သေခြင်း၏ အရိပ်များ အာဇာနည်အပေါ်သို့ ကျရောက်လာစဉ်တွင်၊ သူ၏ နောက်ဆုံးအတွေးသည် ကြီးမားသော နိုးထမှုတွင် သူ၏ ပထမဆုံးအတွေး ဖြစ်လာမည့်အတိုင်း၊ သူ့ကို ကောင်းချီးခံစားရသူတို့၏ ပျော်ရွှင်မှုသို့ ကြိုဆိုမည့် အသက်ရှင်ခြင်းကို ပေးသော အရှင်နှင့် တွေ့ဆုံရန် ရှေ့သို့ ခုန်ပျံသွားသည်။

He hears the witness of steadfast souls, who, though destitute, afflicted, tormented, yet bear fearless, solemn testimony for the faith,
declaring, “I know whom I have believed.” These, yielding up their
lives for the faith, declare to the world that He in whom they have
trusted is able to save to the uttermost.
Ransomed by the sacrifce of Christ, washed from sin in His
blood, and clothed in His righteousness, Paul has the witness in
himself that his soul is precious in the sight of his Redeemer. His
life is hid with Christ in God, and he is persuaded that He who has [513]
conquered death is able to keep that which is committed to His trust.
His mind grasps the Saviour’s promise, “I will raise him up at the
last day.” John 6:40. His thoughts and hopes are centered on the
second coming of his Lord. And as the sword of the executioner
descends and the shadows of death gather about the martyr, his latest
thought springs forward, as will his earliest in the great awakening,
to meet the Life-giver, who shall welcome him to the joy of the blest.

အသက်ကြီးသော ပေါလုသည် ဘုရားသခင်၏ နှုတ်ကပတ်တော်နှင့် ယေရှုခရစ်၏ သက်သေခံချက်အတွက် သက်သေအဖြစ် သူ၏အသွေးကို သွန်းလောင်းခဲ့သည်မှာ ရာစုနှစ်ပေါင်း နှစ်ဆယ်ခန့် ရှိခဲ့ပြီဖြစ်သည်။ နောင်လာနောက်သားများအတွက် ဤသန့်ရှင်းသောသူ၏ ဘဝနောက်ဆုံးမြင်ကွင်းများကို မည်သည့် သစ္စာရှိသောလက်ကမျှ မှတ်တမ်းမတင်ခဲ့သော်လည်း၊ ဘုရားသခင်၏ မှုတ်သွင်းခြင်းက သူ၏သေခါနီး သက်သေခံချက်ကို ကျွန်ုပ်တို့အတွက် ထိန်းသိမ်းပေးထားသည်။ သူ၏အသံသည် တံပိုးသံကဲ့သို့ ထိုအချိန်မှစ၍ ခေတ်အဆက်ဆက် ပဲ့တင်ထပ်နေခဲ့ရာ၊ ခရစ်တော်အတွက် သက်သေခံသူ ထောင်ပေါင်းများစွာအား သူ၏သတ္တိဖြင့် အားပေးခဲ့ပြီး၊ ဝမ်းနည်းပူဆွေးနေသော နှလုံးသား ထောင်ပေါင်းများစွာတွင် သူ၏အောင်ပွဲခံ ရွှင်လန်းမှု၏ ပဲ့တင်သံကို နိုးထစေခဲ့သည်-

Well-nigh a score of centuries have passed since Paul the aged
poured out his blood as a witness for the word of God and the testimony of Jesus Christ. No faithful hand recorded for the generations
to come the last scenes in the life of this holy man, but Inspiration
has preserved for us his dying testimony. Like a trumpet peal his
voice has rung out through all the ages since, nerving with his own
courage thousands of witnesses for Christ and wakening in thousands of sorrow-stricken hearts the echo of his own triumphant joy:

“ယခုတွင် ငါသည် ယဇ်ပူဇော်ခြင်းကို ခံရတော့မည်၊ ငါထွက်ခွာရမည့် အချိန်သည် နီးပြီ။ ငါသည် ကောင်းစွာ တိုက်လှန်ခဲ့ပြီ၊ ငါ၏ပြေးလမ်းကို အဆုံးတိုင်အောင် ပြေးခဲ့ပြီ၊ ငါ၏ယုံကြည်ခြင်းကို စောင့်ထိန်းခဲ့ပြီ။ ယခုမှစ၍ ဖြောင့်မတ်သော တရားသူကြီးတည်းဟူသော သခင်ဘုရားသည် ထိုနေ့ရက်၌ ငါ့အား ပေးသနားတော်မူမည့် ဖြောင့်မတ်ခြင်းသရဖူသည် ငါ့အဖို့ အသင့်ရှိ၏။ ငါ့အားသာ ပေးတော်မူမည်မဟုတ်၊ ကိုယ်တော် ပေါ်ထွန်းတော်မူခြင်းကို တောင့်တသောသူ အပေါင်းတို့အားလည်း ပေးတော်မူမည်။” ၂ တိမောသေ ၄:၆-၈။

“I am now ready to be offered, and the time of my departure is
at hand. I have fought a good fght, I have fnished my course, I
have kept the faith: henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of
righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, shall give me

at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love His
appearing.” 2 Timothy 4:6-8.
