ထာဝရဘုရားသည် ငါ၏သိုးထိန်းဖြစ်တော် မူ၏။ ငါသည် ဆင်းရဲမခံရ။

Probably the most beloved and most well-known psalm of the Psalter, this song of trust describes how God supplies all the needs of His sheep. The sheep/lamb of the psalm was, historically, David; but eschatologically, as the psalm suggests in its center (see below), the sheep will be a Righteous One (v. 3) who goes through the valley of death (v. 4)—pointing ultimately to the righteous, dying Lamb of God. Because Jesus the Lamb has gone before us, depending fully upon God as His Shepherd, we may safely follow. The structure of the psalm is symmetrical (chiastic):

23:2 green pastures. Literally, “lovely places of fresh, tender grass.” Emphasizes pleasantness of the location, not the quality of the grass as food (sheep do not eat lying down). still waters. Literally, “waters of rest, repose.” Sheep are afraid of moving water, so the shepherd leads them to (or prepares for them) quiet waters.

23:3 restores my soul. For “soul,” see notes on 6:3 and Gen. 2:7. The Greek words for “restore/heal” (iatria) and “soul” (psyche) combine together to form the word “psychiatry”; God, the divine Psychiatrist, brings restoration to the soul. paths. Literally, “wagon tracks,” implying broad, smooth, well-marked paths so that the sheep can easily follow. See 5:8; 25:4–5; 27:11. His name’s sake. The shepherd’s name (reputation) is at stake in caring well for His sheep.

23:4 valley of the shadow of death. In the time of David, this probably referred to the Wadi Qilt, a narrow valley running between Jerusalem and Jericho, which had a 4 1/2 mile (7 km) stretch of canyon with walls some 1,500 feet (450 m) high and passage only 10–12 feet (3–3.5 m) wide in the bottom, containing many caves where wolves and bears could hide. Your rod and Your staff. The ancient shepherd carried a 2–3 feet (60–90 cm) long metal-tipped rod to ward off wild animals and a long crooked staff to rescue straying sheep. comfort. 23:5 table … enemies. The shepherd removed poisonous plants and provided pasture for the sheep in the midst of the enemies (wild animals) all about. oil … cup. At day’s end the shepherd would rub soothing oil into the cuts and scrapes of the sheep and offer water from his own cup to quench their thirst.

23:6 follow. Literally, “pursue.” The picture may be of the two shepherd dogs who follow after the sheep to keep them in line and safe. house of the Lord. The sheep dwelt safely in the presence of the Shepherd; ultimately this points to the last day fulfillment when God’s people (sheep) will dwell with Him in His heavenly house forever.
