Book Two: 42–72 The second book of the Psalter contains 31 poems (18 attributed to David; 7 to the Sons of Korah [but Ps. 43 should also be included]; 1 to Asaph [Ps. 50]; 1 to Solomon [Ps. 72], and 3 to an unknown composer(s) [Ps. 66, 67, and 71]), and is characterized by the dominant usage of the name Elohim for God instead of Yahweh (Ps. 73–83 also prefer Elohim). There is a theological reason behind this. The psalmists are asking questions—Where is God? Why is He silent? They are crying for His company. A God who is mighty but distant corresponds to the meaning of Elohim (a transcendent and universal God), while on the other hand, the name Yahweh reveals the personal, present, and intervening God.

42–43 These two psalms form a single poem. For this reason Ps. 43 has no superscription. There are internal arguments for the unity: same theme, style, and repetitions. They were probably divided for practical worship reasons. This literary unit has an introduction (42:1) with three stanzas (42:2–6; 42:7–11; 43:1–5), and the main refrain is repeated three times (42:6, 11; 43:5).

42—God’s Presence Is Everything for Me

One of the most profound and best known prayers for God’s presence and deliverance, Ps. 42 is often compared to Ps. 23. It combines lament and hope.

42:title Contemplation. Hebrew, maschil means giving instructions, a wisdom or didactic psalm. The Korahites were Levites, descendents of Kohath (1 Chr. 6:16, 22, 31–33, 37–38; 2 Chr. 20:19), and appointed by David to be musicians at the sanctuary services. It seems that they formed a guild of musicians, singers, and composers. This is the first psalm attributed to them (their anthology of songs consists of Ps. 42–49, to which belongs also Ps. 84, 85, 87, and 88).

42:1 As the deer pants … So pants my soul for You. The psalmist is situated outside of the sanctuary so the verb “to pant” expresses the strong desire, agonizing yearning, and deep personal thirst for God. Our being can only be in peace when it rests in the Lord’s presence. This profound desire for God’s presence is a sign of the true believer in all times and all cultures, because we live in exile (Phil. 3:20; Heb. 11:13) and wait in hope for redemption (Rom. 8:22–25). Full satisfaction of this longing will only come at Christ’s second coming (1 Cor. 13:12; 15:51–54; 1 Thess. 4:14–18).

42:2 the living God. The God of Israel is alive. He is God of the living, and the composer longs for His company. He wants to meet the Lord in the temple in order to communicate with Him; he feels separated from God by distance (see v. 6).

42:3 My tears. The psalmist is in deep distress, and he laments. He feels abandoned and forgotten by God. An enemy oppresses him; circumstances hinder him from going to the temple to worship God.

42:4 He looks back to the joyful occasions of traveling to the temple. This psalm was probably a hymn which was sung on the way to Jerusalem in order to meet the Lord in the temple. At least three times a year the people of God were obliged to go to Jerusalem to celebrate different spring and fall festivals (Ex. 23:14–17; 34:22–24; Deut. 16:16).

42:5 Why are you cast down. See also v. 11 and 43:5. People are laughing at him. Hope in God. The principle thought. The psalmist speaks to himself and encourages himself with these words. The author transitions from despair to hope; God is someone real.

42:8 The theological center of the verse which describes assurance in God’s love and presence, and expresses hope in spite of all troubles.

42:9 I will say to God. The psalmist addresses God in his misery, calls Him his personal Rock, and pours out all his grief, misery, and mental pain.
