 1 ထိုသို့ မိန့်တော်မူပြီးမှ ယေရှုသည်ကောင်းကင်သို့ကြည့်မျှော်၍၊ အိုအဘ၊ အကျွန်ုပ်အချိန်ရောက်ပါပြီ။
² ကိုယ်တော်သည် သားတော်လက်သို့ အပ်ပေးတော်မူသမျှသောသူတို့အား ထာဝရအသက်ကို ပေးစေ ခြင်းငှါ၊ လူမျိုးအပေါင်းတို့ကို အစိုးရသောအခွင့်တန်ခိုးကိုသားတော်အား ပေးတော်မူသည်နှင်အညီ၊ သားတော် သည် ကိုယ်တော်၏ဘုန်းကို ထင်ရှားစေပါမည်အကြောင်း သားတော်၏ဘုန်းထင်ရှားစေတော်မူပါ။
³ ထာဝရအသက်ဟူမူကား၊ မှန်သောဘုရားသခင် တဆူတည်းဖြစ်တော်မူသော ကိုယ်တော်ကို၎င်း၊ စေ လွှတ်တော်မူသော ယေရှုခရစ်ကို၎င်း၊ သိုကျွမ်းခြင်းတည်း။
⁴ အကျွန်ုပ်သည် မြေကြီးပေါ်မှာကိုယ်တော်ကို ဘုန်းထင်ရှားစေပါပြီ။ အကျွန်ုပ်ဆောင်ရွက်စရာဘို့ အကျွန်ုပ်အပ်ပေတော်မူသောအမှုကို အကျွန်ုပ်ဆောင်ရွက်၍ ပြီးပါပြီ။
⁵ အိုအဘ၊ ဤကမ္ဘာမတည်မရှိမှီအထံတော်၌ အကျွန်ုပ်ခံစားရသောဘုန်းအသရေနှင့် ယခုတွင်လည်း အကျွန်ုပ်ကိုအထံတော်၌ ချီးမြောက်တော်မူပါ၏။
⁶ ဤလောကထဲမှယူ၍ အကျွန်ုပ်၌ အပ်ပေးတော်မူသောသူတို့အား အကျွန်ုပ်သည် ကိုယ်တော်၏ နာမကိုပြပါပြီ။ ထိုသူတို့ကို ကိုယ်တော်သည်ပိုင်တော်မူသဖြင့် အကျွန်ုပ်အား ပေးတော်မူ၏။ ကိုယ်တော်၏ နှုတ်ကပတ်တရားကို သူတို့သည်စောင့်ကြ၏။
⁷ အကျွန်ုပ်အား ပေးတော်မူသမျှတို့သည် ကိုယ်တော်မှဖြစ်ကြောင်းကို သူတို့သည်ယခုသိကြပါ၏။
⁸ အကြောင်းမူကား၊ အကျွန်ုပ်အား ပေးတော်မူသမျှသောအရာတို့ကို သူတို့အားအကျွန်ုပ်ပေး၍ သူတို့ သည် ခံယူသဖြင့်၊ အကျွန်ုပ်သည် အထံတော်မှကြွလာသည်ကို အတပ်သိကြသည်နှင့် ကိုယ်တော်သည် အကျွန်ုပ်ကို စေလွှတ်တော်မူသည်ကို ယုံကြပါ၏။
⁹ သူတို့အဘို့အလို့ငှါ အကျွန်ုပ်ဆုတောင်းပါ၏။ လောကီသားတို့အဘို့အလို့ငှါ ဆုတောင်းသည်မဟုတ်ပါ၊ အကျွန်ုပ်အား ပေးတော်မူသောသူတို့သည် ကိုယ်တော်၏လူဖြစ်သောကြောင့်၊ ထိုသူတို့အဘို့အလို့ငှါ ဆုတောင်း ပါ၏။
¹⁰ အကျွန်ုပ်နှင့်စပ်ဆိုင်သောအရာရှိသမျှတို့သည် ကိုယ်တော်နှင့် စပ်ဆိုင်ကြပါ၏။ ကိုယ်တော်နှင့်စပ်ဆိုင် သောအရာရှိသမျှတို့သည်လည်း၊ အကျွန်ုပ်နှင့်စပ်ဆိုင်၍ ထိုအရာတို့အားဖြင့် အကျွန်ုပ်သည် ဘုန်းထင်ရှား ပါ၏။
¹¹ ယခုမှစ၍အကျွန်ုပ်သည် ဤလောက၌မရှိပါ၊ ဤသူတို့မူကား၊ ဤလောက၌ရှိရစ်ကြပါမည်။ အကျွန်ုပ် သည် ကိုယ်တော်ထံသို့ သွားရပါမည်။ သန့်ရှင်းတော်မူသောအဘ၊ ကိုယ်တော်နှင့်အကျွန်ုပ်သည် တလုံးတဝ တည်းဖြစ်သကဲ့သို့ အကျွန်ုပ်အား ပေးတော်မူသော ဤသူတို့သည် ဖြစ်ရပါမည်အကြောင်း၊ သူတို့ကို ကိုယ်တော်၏ နာမ၌တည်စေတော်မူပါ။
¹² အကျွန်ုပ်သည် ဤလောက၌ ဤသူတို့နှင့်တကွရှိစဉ်ကာလ၊ သူတို့ကိုကိုယ်တော်၏နာမ၌ တည်စေပါ ပြီ။ အကျွန်ုပ်အား ပေးတော်မသောသူတို့ကို အကျွန်ုပ်စောင်မပါပြီ။ ထိုသူတို့တွင် ပျက်စီးခြင်း၏သား တ ယောက်မှတပါး အဘယ်သူမျှပျက်စီးခြင်းသို့မရောက်ပါ၊ ထိုသူသည် ပျက်စီးခြင်းသို့ ရောက်သည်အကြောင်း ကား၊ ကျမ်းစာပြည့်စုံမည်အကြောင်းတည်း။
¹³ ယခုတွင် အကျွန်ုပ်သည် ကိုယ်တော်ထံသို့သွားရမည်ဖြစ်၍၊ ဤသူသည် အကျွန်ုပ်ကို အမှီပြုသဖြင့် ဝမ်းမြောက်ခြင်းနှင့် ပြည်စုံမည်အကြောင်း၊ ဤစကားကို ဤလောက၌ အကျွန်ုပ်ပြောပါ၏။
¹⁴ ကိုယ်တော်၏နှုတ်ကပတ်တရားကို ဤသူတို့အား အကျွန်ုပ်ပေးပါပြီ။ အကျွန်ုပ်သည် ဤလောကနှင့် မဆက်ဆံသကဲ့သို့ ဤသူတို့သည် မဆက်ဆံသောကြောင့်၊ လောကီသားတို့သည် ဤသူတို့ကို မုန်းကြပါ၏။
¹⁵ ဤသူတို့ကို ဤလောကမှ နှုတ်ယူတော်မူမည်အကြောင်း အကျွန်ုပ်တောင်းသည်မဟုတ်ပါ။ မကောင်း သော အမှုအရာနှင့်ကင်းလွတ်စေခြင်းငှါ စောင့်မတော်မူမည်အကြောင်းကိုသာ တောင်းပါ၏။
¹⁶ အကျွန်ုပ်သည် ဤလောကနှင့်မဆက်ဆံသကဲ့သို့ ဤသူတို့သည် မဆက်ဆံကြပါ။
¹⁷ ကိုယ်တော်၏သမ္မာတရားအားဖြင့် သူတို့ကိုသန့်ရှင်းစေတော်မူပါ။ ကိုယ်တော်၏နှုတ်ကပတ်သည် သမ္မာတရားဖြစ်ပါ၏။
¹⁸ ကိုယ်တော်သည်အကျွန်ုပ်ကို ဤလောကသို့ စေလွှတ်တော်မူသည်နည်းတူ၊ အကျွန်ုပ်သည် ဤသူတို့ကို စေလွှတ်ပါ၏။
¹⁹ သမ္မာတရားအားဖြင့် သူတို့ကို သန့်ရှင်းစေမည်အကြောင်း၊ အကျွန်ုပ်သည် သူတို့အဘို့အလိုငှါ ကိုယ် ကို သန့်ရှင်းစေပါ၏။
²⁰ ထိုသူတို့အဘို့ကိုသာ အကျွန်ုပ်ဆုတောင်းသည် မဟုတ်ပါ၊ သူတို့ ဟောပြောခြင်းအားဖြင့် အကျွန်ုပ်ကို ယုံကြည်သောသူတို့အဘို့ကိုလည်း ဆုတောင်းပါ၏။
²¹ ကိုယ်တော်သည် အကျွန်ုပ်ကိုစေလွှတ်တော်မူသည်ကို လောကီသားတို့သည် ယုံကြမည်အကြောင်း ထို သူအပေါင်းတို့သည် တလုံးတဝတည်းဖြစ်လျက်၊ အဘ၊ ကိုယ်တော်သည် အကျွန်ုပ်၌ရှိတော်မူ၍ အကျွန်ုပ်သည် လည်း ကိုယ်တော်၌ရှိသကဲ့သို့၊ ထိုသူအပေါင်းတို့သည် ငါတို့၌တလုံးတဝတည်းဖြစ်စေခြင်းငှါ ဆုတောင်းပါ၏။

²⁴ အိုအဘ၊ ကိုယ်တော်သည် ဤကမ္ဘာမတည်မရှိမှီ အကျွန်ုပ်ကိုချစ်၍ အကျွန်ုပ်အား ပေးတော်မူသော ဘုန်းတော်ကို အကျွန်ုပ်အား ပေးတော်ပေးတော်မူသောသူတို့သည် ရှုမြင်ရမည်အကြောင်း၊ အကျွန်ုပ်ရှိရာ အရပ်၌ အကျွန်ုပ်နှင့်အတူ ရှိနေစေခြင်းငှါ အကျွန်ုပ်အလိုရှိပါ၏။
²⁵ တရားတော်မူသောအဘ၊ လောကီသားတို့သည် ကိုယ်တော်ကိုမသိသော်လည်း အကျွန်ုပ်သိပါ၏။ ကိုယ်တော်သည် အကျွန်ုပ်ကို စေလွှတ်တော်မူကြောင်းကို ထိုသူတို့သည်သိကြပါ၏။

17:1–26

Jesus’s Intercessory Prayer

The three parts of the Farewell Discourse are followed by the so-called Intercessory Prayer offered by Jesus for the disciples, the longest and most sublime of His recorded prayers. This prayer caps off the Farewell Discourse.

17:1–5. Glorification of the Son. Jesus started His intercessory or priestly prayer with a reference to the Father’s work of salvation. Since the first step toward the glorification of Jesus would be His death on the cross (John 12:16, 23–28; 13:31–32; cf. 7:39), He prayed that the Father’s plan would be fully accomplished in and through Him. From the very beginning Jesus was fully conscious of the main purpose of His mission (cf. 3:16–17; 10:11, 15; 12:47; 15:13). Now the hour had come, and He prayed to the Father to glorify Him, that He might also glorify the Father (17:1). Jesus’s request to be glorified expressed His total willingness to return to the Father via the cross. This was the glory through surrendering His life for others. But the exaltation of the Son through the cross also brought glory to the Father because His death was part of the plan of the Father for the salvation of the world (3:16–17).

Jesus received from the Father authority over all people (lit. “flesh”; 17:2a) in the sense that He might give eternal life to all those the Father had given Him (v. 2b). That is to say, the eternal destiny of all humankind had been committed to Jesus. That final clause of the verse highlights the divine initiative in salvation, a recurrent theme in John’s Gospel (6:37, 44–45; 10:27–29; 17:6–8; 18:9; cf. 16:9). In the final analysis, every person is responsible for his or her response to God’s offer of salvation, as the next section clarifies (17:3; cf. 3:19–20; 5:40; 8:24; 12:46). Salvation or eternal life is experienced only when the Father is acknowledged as the only true God and Jesus Christ as the One sent by Him (cf. 5:43–44). This practical knowledge is obtained by means of a personal, intimate relationship with God (cf. Is. 1:3; Jer. 31:34; Hos. 6:2–3). This is the way Jesus knows the Father (John 10:14–15; 14:10, 20; 17:21) and how He wants us to know Him (14:20–21; 15:4–9). What Jesus was emphasizing at this time included the experience of salvation itself, going way beyond the simple act of believing. Believing can sometimes be superficial and transitory (2:23–25; 8:30–31; 12:11; cf. 12:37).

Jesus returned to the main topic and provided the grounds for His urgent request: He asked to be glorified with the same glory He had before creation because He had glorified the Father by completing the mission the Father assigned Him (17:4–5). This is certainly an affirmation of the preexistence of Jesus (cf. 1:1–3, 15; 8:58; 16:28; 17:24), but it is much more. In the conflict Jesus faced on earth against evil powers, what was at stake was not only His own glory in heaven but also that of the Father. Consequently, the victory of Jesus is acclaimed as a source of assurance (16:33; cf. 17:11). It represents the victory of the Father as well.

17:6–10. Given from the World. The main part of the prayer deals with the disciples. The most important aspect of the earthly mission of Jesus was the revelation of the character of the Father (14:9). His works revealed as much about the Father as about Himself (5:19–20; 10:25, 37–38; 14:10–11). Such revelation was available not only to the disciples, but they were among the ones who responded favorably to it. They accepted the divine message or word (14:15, 21; 15:10; 17:6). The disciples believed and confessed that Jesus came from the Father (16:30; 17:8), and now Jesus added that they also knew that His work was from God (17:7). They had also embraced His words as the words of the Son of God (see commentary on John 6:66–71). Therefore, Jesus interceded for them before the Father.

By saying that He was not praying for the world (17:9), Jesus was not saying that He had no concern for the world—just that at that moment His deepest thoughts were with those whom the Father had given Him from the world (cf. v. 6). In fact, the salvation of the world was envisaged in the mission of the Twelve (v. 23), and Jesus would also pray for those who would believe through their testimony (vv. 20–26). The idea that it was the Father who gave Jesus the disciples (vv. 6, 9; cf. 6:44–45) implies that it is only through divine influence that people can come to believe in Jesus (16:9; cf. Phil. 2:13; 1 Thess. 4:8). And since the Father and the Son are one and have everything in common, Jesus could speak of the disciples as His own (John 17:9–10). As He was talking about the belief of the disciples, Jesus returned to the thought of glory (cf. vv. 1–6). It is not that the disciples would reveal the glory of Jesus just as He revealed the glory of the Father during His mission (cf. 13:31–32). The thought is rather that the effectiveness of Jesus’s ministry was made manifest in the fact that the disciples believed in Him. Whenever a human being turns to Jesus, He is glorified.

17:11–19. Well-Being of the Disciples. Starting from v. 11, Jesus prayed for the well-being of the disciples. Since He was soon to return to the Father, Jesus spoke from the perspective of His absence. He prayed for the protection of the disciples and made four special requests. First, that the disciples might be one (v. 11; cf. v. 21), just as He and the Father are one (10:30). Such a unity is by itself a divine gift and can be attained only by God’s grace. Up to this point Jesus had kept them safe in the name of the Father, except for Judas, the one headed for destruction (17:12; cf. 13:21–30). Second, He prayed that they would be filled with His joy (17:13), which was possible by remaining in the Father’s love and by obeying His words (cf. 15:11; 16:20–24). Third, Jesus’s request was that they might be protected from “the evil one” (17:15). The reference is to the active forces of evil in the world, which was expressed in hostility toward the disciples (cf. 15:18). Jesus did not ask that the disciples be taken out of the world because they had a mission to fulfill (cf. 17:18; cf. 13:20; 20:21). This is a reminder that though we are not of the world (17:14, 16), we are not to be detached from it, because the world is our mission field.

The last request of Jesus was that the disciples might be sanctified by the truth (v. 17). To be sanctified means to be brought into the realm of the sacred, to be dedicated to holy use. This sanctification was to be realized through the constant application of the Father’s word to the life of the disciples because His word is truth. Here is the real tension between being in the world and not belonging in the world. The sanctification Jesus talked about had a mission purpose: the disciples were to be sanctified in order to be sent into the world (v. 18; cf. 13:20; 20:21). Jesus Himself was determined to sanctify Himself for the sake of the disciples (17:19). This carries a sacrificial connotation because He sanctified Himself for the task of dying for them (cf. 6:51; 10:11, 15; 11:50, 51–52; 15:13). It was His sanctification that made it possible for the disciples to be sanctified for their saving mission in the world.

17:20–26. Future Believers. Jesus directed His attention to the future generations of believers; He was praying for us as well as for those who will come after us. By the time John wrote this Gospel, the apostolic missionary activity had already achieved remarkable success (cf. Rom. 15:19; Col. 1:6). This happened in spite of the fact that the church was facing challenges from both inside and outside, threatening the faith and the unity of the church (see John: Introduction). In this prayer, Jesus’s dominant concern was for the unity of His followers, grounded in the unity of Jesus with the Father (John 10:30, 38; 14:10, 20). The point is that, together with love (15:12–13; 17:26), unity is essential in the life of believers because it demonstrates the reconciling power of the mission of Jesus in the world (17:21; cf. v. 23). To achieve this unity, Jesus had given His followers His own glory (v. 22). Of course, Jesus referred not to His preexistent glory (v. 5; cf. v. 24) but to the glory of the character of the Father as a reflection in their own lives. Jesus displayed this glory in every aspect of His earthly ministry (1:14; 2:11; 11:4, 40; 14:9) because of His oneness with the Father (10:30). The unity of believers is neither self-generated nor an end in itself. It is the result of our inner apprehension of God’s character through an intimate association with Jesus and the Father (14:20–21, 23; 15:4–7). This unity testifies to the world; it is the evidence the Father presents to the world to demonstrate that He sent His Son to save the world (17:23).

As Jesus moved to the end of the prayer, He expressed the desire that His followers might be with Him forever and see His preexisting glory (v. 24; cf. v. 5). This echoed the promise in 14:1–3. This request was based on the conviction that the Father loved Jesus (17:24) and that the disciples truly knew that Jesus had come from the Father (v. 25; cf. 6:68–69; 16:27). Despite the fact that the world did not accept His revelation (cf. 1:10; 8:55; 16:3), Jesus was pleased with the response of the disciples, though they still had much more to learn. He would continue to instruct them through the work of the Spirit (14:26; 15:26; 16:12–14) in order that the love with which the Father had loved Jesus would be in their hearts (17:26; cf. 13:34; 15:9–10, 12).
